From the National Film Registry

Planet of the Apes (1968)

Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner

Charlton Heston stars in this sci-fi classic about an astronaut crew that lands on a planet which is dominated by apes.

Each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films to be added to the National Film Registry, a collection of films which are deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. This is done in compliance with the terms of the National Film Preservation Act of 1996. For more information, visit the Library of Congress' National Film Registry page. For her role as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, actress Marion Cotillard had her hairline shaved back two centimeters to better resemble Ms. Piaf. Cotillard's eyebrows were also shaved off, and later penciled in.
