The mission of the Hartford Public Library is to promote and support literacy and learning, to provide free and open access to information and ideas, and to help people participate in our democratic society.
In keeping with its mission and with advances in information technology, the Library provides users with access to the Internet. The Internet is a rapidly growing global network that offers a vast array of information that can be used as a resource to educate, inform and entertain. While much of this material is of high quality, there are few controls and little uniformity so the information may be less than accurate or authoritative. Sites are constantly changing. Some sites may be considered controversial or inappropriate depending on personal interpretation. Users are responsible for the choices of sites that they visit. As with library materials, access to the Internet is the responsibility of the individual, or for children, the parent or guardian.
The Library is a forum for all points of view and adheres to the principles of intellectual freedom as expressed in the Library Bill of Rights formulated by the American Library Association, and endorsed by the Board of Directors. The Hartford Public Library makes no warranty, expressed or implied, for the timeliness, accuracy or usefulness for particular purpose of information accessed via the Internet.
Internet access in the Library is available on computers that are located in open public areas and are subject to supervision. We encourage customers to ask library staff for assistance and we are ready to suggest sites that have proven to be useful and timely.
Users must comply with U.S. Copyright Law and all other applicable laws.
Adopted by the Hartford Public Library Board of Directors January 1998
