World Asthma Day was observed on Tuesday, May 6, 2008

   Asthma is an epidemic in Hartford and the State of Connecticut.  Nationally,
   asthma is affecting  more and more people.  In order to provide up to date
   information  about this disease, the Hartford Public Library has created this
   webliography that contains links to Web sites, Books, Periodicals and Local
   resources. To celebrate World Asthma Day, May 6, 2008, the library hosted
   a booth at an event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Francis Hospital in
   conjunction with the Hartford Health    Department, Connecticut Asthma Call to Action,
   and the American Lung Association Connecticut.  A mini-class on finding Asthma
   Information on the Web was held at the Library.  At St. Francis there were games,
   and representatives from many agencies.

   The Burden of Asthma in New England a report by the Asthma Regional Council
   March 2006

   Fact Sheets - Connecticut Children's Medical Center has a special Asthma Center
                     with information for parents and caregivers.

   Community -Connecticut Lung Association considers itself to be Connecticut's
                    leader in the attack on asthma.  It provides a referral service to
                    medical providers and is actively promoting its Open Airways for
                    Schools program. The program teaches children how to manage their
                    asthma.

                    The University of Connecticut Health Center has a program
                    ConnecticutHealth that promotes health projects in all 169 towns of
                    Connecticut. Connecticut Health has links to resources produced by
                    the Harvard Medical Letter. Type in the word <asthma> to find the
                    most current information.

   Statistics -Environment and Human Health, Inc. is a Connecticut based research
                  company that has published A Survey of Asthma Prevalence this details
                  the prevalence of asthma in Connecticut school children. The full-text is
                  available on line.  In addition there are other recent reports and links to
                  other Web sites.

                  Hartford: Your Health and Your Environment is a Web site that
                  maintains current information on Asthma statistics and the environmental
                  aspects of Asthma in Hartford.

Web sites
    Allergy and Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatic - Breatherville USA is a delightful
   educational child friendly Web resource about asthma. This site also provides helpful
   resources for asthmatic kids in school.

   Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America provides education, research and support
   including free brochures and newsletters. The foundation publishes a special report
   Ethnic Disparities in the Burden and Treatment of Asthma that highlights the trends found
   in minority populations. Try the foundation's  handy    Pollen and Mold Count calculator.

   American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology is website co-sponsored by
   allergists and  their professional organization, the
   American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. There are tips for patients and
   family and a special section for kids, including news items.

   EPA the Environmental Protection Agency publishes over 600 documents on asthma
   including articles about asthma and school  environments, research about asthma, and ways
   to avoid asthma triggers.

   Global Initiative for Asthma contains information on the global perspective of
   asthma. Contributors from around the world provide research and links to current
   events such as Word Asthma Day. You can also find Guidelines in English and
   Spanish for patients.
  
   Hartford: Your Health and Your Environment is a Web site that maintains current
   information on Asthma statistics and the environmental aspects of Asthma in
   Hartford.
 
   Medem is a communications network connecting patients and physicians.  It has a
   search feature that allows you to get information from its medical library.

   National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control provides
   information on Asthma that includes general information and statistics nationwide.
   Also, included is legislative action.

   National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute publishes a page on the causes,
   symptoms, and diagnosis of Asthma.

   National Jewish Medical  and Research Center is a leader in research and treatment
   of asthma. You will find specific information for parents and children on coping with

   Respirar is a bi-lingual, English and Spanish, Web site directed at patients and their

Periodicals 

   iCONN - the Connecticut digital library provides a Health and Wellness Database.
   Using a Connecticut library card from your home or office will provide access to
   over 9000 articles. By typing the keyword "asthma" in the search box. You may
   read these online, print them or email them to yourself or a friend.

 Asthma: Aim to be Symptom free is a Web page put out by the National Center
 for Environmental  Health.

 Strategies for Addressing Asthma Within a Coordinated School Health Program is put
 out by National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. 2002

 Asthma Research Strategy is put out by the EPA, Office of Research and
 Development. 2002

   Action Against Asthma is produced by the U. S. Department of Health and Human
   Services, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and evaluation. 2000

   Supporting Students with Asthma is published by The Educational Resources
