In our efforts to get the "bad guys"
responsible for acts of terrorism, we must be careful not to punish the
innocent by trampling on the civil liberties that are the foundation of
our free society. We do not want to lose the very freedoms that we are
trying so hard to defend. The following are sources of information on
this very important topic.
In
Defense of Freedom
This online statement is a joint release of a coalition of civil rights
and civil liberties groups, political, religious, and immigration groups
who are concerned about threats to civil liberties as a result of 9-11.
Leadership
Conference on Civil Rights
Civilrights.org is a project of the Leadership Conference on Civil
Rights, a coalition of 180 organizations working for equality and
justice. Civilrights.org presents the policy perspectives, strategies,
and research of the coalition.
Attack
on America; The Law and Civil Liberties

This site is part of the Bibliographical Center for Research (BCR)
website. BCR is a nonprofit, multistate library cooperative that has
served the library community since 1935, providing library and
information services.
American
Civil Liberties Union
The ACLU is the premier civil liberties
watchdog organization. Their website features "Safe and Free in
Times of Crisis," explaining their civil-liberties perspective on
the nation’s reaction to 9-11.
American Civil
Liberties Union of Florida
This ACLU chapter has published a pamphlet entitled "Know your
rights; what to do if you’re stopped by the police, the FBI, the INS
or the Customs Service." It is available in English, Spanish, and
Arabic.
Center for Democracy
& Technology
This organization speaks out against surrendering freedom in the belief
that doing so will purchase security on its website.
