50th Anniversary of the First Polio Vaccine  The Centers for Disease Control is marking the Anniversary of the first polio vaccine with information about the history of the vaccine and the biographies of the scientists who developed it.

National Museum of American Art has a display about the history of the polio epidemic and the battle to cure it.  On display are the iron lungs and leg braces that were used by polio victims.  The online exhibit complements the current exhibition at the museum, "Whatever happened to polio."


March of Dimes is an organization that came into being because of the polio epidemic of 1916. Although polio has largely been eradicated from the United States, the March of Dimes continues its battle against birth defects.
