The 2005 Connecticut
Book Award Ceremony
The 2005 Connecticut Book
Awards, the Connecticut Center for the Book’s tribute to the state’s
literary notables and illustrious illustrators and designers, was held
Sunday, December 4, 2005 in the atrium of Hartford’s City Hall.

Louise Blalock, Chief
Librarian of Hartford Public Library, welcomed everyone to Hartford’s
resplendent City Hall and thanked them for braving the inclement weather.

Richard Sugarman, Founding
President of The Connecticut Forum, was a gracious and entertaining Master
of Ceremonies.

Louise Blalock, Connecticut
Center for the Book Advisory Council Chair Billie Levy, and keynote speaker,
novelist Katharine Weber.

Connecticut Center for the
Book Advisory Council member Susan Aller chaired the Biography/Memoir panel
and presented a pewter lamp to Charles Slack, author of Hetty: The Genius
and Madness of America’s First Female Tycoon.

Council member Bina Williams
presented the award for Children’s Author to Leslie Connor for Miss
Bridie Chose a Shovel.

Etienne Delessert,
illustrator of Who Killed Cock Robin?, received his award for
Children’s Illustrator from Council member Mary Ann Hoberman.

William Drenttel,
co-designer with Don Whelan of Lasting Impressions: The Grolier Club
Library, received his award from Council member Jim Lee, chair of the
Design jury.

Mary Etter, Council member
and chair of the Fiction panel, presented Pete Duval’s award to him for
Rear View.

James Gustave Speth, author
of Red Sky at Morning: America and the Crisis of the Global Environment,
received the award for Nonfiction from Council member Robert Thorson.

Sophie Cabot Black, winner
of the Poetry award for The Descent, received her award from former
Council member Tom Radko.

The Lifetime Achievement
Award for Service to the Literary Community was presented to Dr. Vivian
Shipley by Faith Vicinanza, a former Council member.

Millrace Books of Farmington
was the bookseller for the event, providing copies of books written,
illustrated, or designed by the 21 finalists who were on hand to sign.
