2005 National Book Festival

The fifth annual National Book Festival took place on Saturday 24 September on the National Mall in Washington, DC.  The Festival continues to be organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by first lady Laura Bush.

The Festival was free and open to the public from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and featured appearances and book signings by more than 80 award-winning authors and illustrators.

There were pavilions with seating for various genres—fiction, children’s and young adults, mysteries and thrillers among them—as well as one for reading promotion agencies that partner with the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, a book sales tent, and another to accommodate tables for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories.

The Library of Congress prints a map of the United States and requests each Pavilion of the States participant to provide a rubber stamp or stickers that visitors can affix to their maps.  Connecticut is a tricky state to find on the map!

Among the costumed characters were BW, the bookworm mascot of Half Price Books, and Pop Fox from Hooked on Phonics.

Author and illustrator Wendell Minor, a Connecticut resident, spent time at the table, chatting with visitors.

Volunteers from The Junior League of Washington were on hand to assist in the Pavilion of the States and elsewhere on the Mall.

The Connecticut table was staffed by (left to right): Mary Engels, Director of the Connecticut State Library’s Middletown Library Service Center; Linda Williams, Children’s Services Consultant for Connecticut State Library; and, Kat Lyons, Connecticut Center for the Book coordinator.
