Diane Smith presented awards to the winners of the essay contest, “Why We Came and What We Brought,” then listened to each student read her essay: First Place, Elizabeth Sirrine, grade 8, Timothy Edwards Middle School, South Windsor; Second Place, Hakima Issack, grade 9, Bulkeley High School, Hartford; and, Third Place, Audrey McKeown, grade 7, Saint Martha School, Enfield

Each student essayist also received a personal letter of congratulations from Senator Christopher Dodd, delivered by his Staff Assistant, Kate Wasserman
