Why We Came and What We Brought

A World of Words essay contest

for students in grades 6-12

Everyone whose family immigrated to Connecticut has roots in another homeland or homelands.  The Connecticut Center for the Book will celebrate those connections in our World of Words programs during the month of April.

Where did your parents, grandparents or earlier ancestors come from?

Do you know why they came to America?

What cultural gifts did they bring with them that were special or unique?

How do you share those gifts with the people in your life?

We would like to share your answers to these questions as part of our World of Words celebration, so tell us, in your own words, what you know about your ethnic identity in an essay of 500 words or fewer.

Essays must be typed, word processed, or printed in ink.  Each entry must come with a completed entry form (see below), and must be postmarked by January 31.  Essays become the property of Connecticut Center for the Book and may be reproduced in whole or in part.  Essays will be judged for their content, organization, and style.  Cash prizes of $25.00, $50.00, and $100.00 will be awarded to the three top essayists in both levels, and the winners will be invited to attend our World of Words opening program at the State Capitol.
