CIVIL LIBERTIES AND THE PRESIDENTAIL ELECTION
Thursday, October 16, 2008, 6:00 p.m.

The next president will pledge to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” But once in office he will also be called upon to restore provisions of the Constitution that have been stripped away in recent years in favor of greatly expanded executive power. American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut Executive Director Andrew Schneider will talk about many of the civil liberties challenges the next president will face such as racial profiling, gender discrimination, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) discrimination, the restoration of habeas corpus, the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, the use of torture as an interrogation technique, the warrentless spying program, and more. Co-sponsored by Hartford 2000 and Hartford Public Library.

ARE WE REPLACING OR REJUVENATING HARTFORD’S WORKFORCE WITH SKILLED WORKERS FROM INDIA?
Monday, October 20, 2008, 5:30 p.m.

Indians are some of the biggest applicants of skilled Work Visas (H1 B) in America, many employed by Hartford’s mega corporations. The H-1B visa allows U.S. companies and universities to hire skilled foreign nationals for up to 6 years. Many argue, however, that the program is a vehicle for cheap labor, and it cuts jobs for Americans. Others argue that H-1B visa holders bring unique skills to high-tech companies, provide training to American workers, and help fill temporary worker shortages. Join us for a lively debate. Moderated by Linda Bayer, Hartford 2000. Panelists include: Dan D’Ambrosio, Hartford Advocate, Annette Brigsted, Attorney, Lynn Ferrari, CSS/CON, Anand Shukla. For information on this topic read Dan D’Ambrosio, “Passage From India” Hartford Advocate. Available at www.hartfordinfo.org.

TOWARD A MORE PERFECT UNION IN AN AGE OF DIVERSITY
Saturday, October 25, 2008, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The 2008 Presidential Election is historic for many reasons. For the first time in our nation’s history we have a multi-racial candidate for president and, for only the second time, a female candidate for vice president. The country is facing momentous economic, international, environmental, demographic, and other challenges. In this historic time and this age of diversity, more than ever it is critical to, as our Founding Fathers wrote in the Constitution, “…form a more perfect union…” Join us for a community conversation on this very timely topic. The goal of the discussion will be to share different perspectives, explore various responses to problems, and seek common ground even among people with different opinions. Co-sponsored by the National Conference for Community and Justice and the Hartford Public Library. Lunch provided. Registration required – call 860-695-6365 or email hi2006@hartfordinfo.org
