1:00-2:15pm Keynote Author
JABARI ASIM
The N Word: Who Can Say It, Who Shouldn't and Why(Houghton
Mifflin; April 2007)
This book reveals how the slur has both
reflected and spread the scourge of bigotry in America over the last 400
years. Asim argues that, even when uttered with the opposite intent by
hipsters and hip-hop icons, using the slur helps keep blacks at the
bottom of America's socio-economic ladder. But, Asim also proves, there
is a place for this word in the mouths and on the pens of those who
truly understand its twisted history---from Mark Twain to Dave Chappelle
to Mos Def. Only when we know its legacy can we loosen this slur's grip
on our national psyche.
Maryland based JABARI ASIM is deputy editor of the Washginton Post
Book World. He also writes a weekly syndicated column on popular
culture. His writing has appeared in Essence, Salon, the Los Angeles
Times, the Village Voice, and elsewhere.

Democracy
by Diplomacy, by Lionel Hurst
"The
diplomats and leaders from the tiny Caribbean states have
utilized the multilateral institutions where they sit at
table with the USA to make themselves a moral force for
good. How could tiny states possibly compel changes in US
foreign policy? A former Ambassador to the UN, the USA and
the OAS, Lionel
Hurst answers this question in
