HPL Lending Policies

Who can obtain an HPL library card?
Although special conditions may apply, all persons who can provide photo identification along with supporting documentation showing proof of current address are eligible to receive a library card from the Hartford Public Library. For example a drivers license and mail posted marked within the last month is acceptable. Residents of Hartford may use this card at any public library in the state. Customers are responsible for all materials checked out on the card.

Can non-residents obtain a card?
Non-residents may use either their own valid hometown library card or obtain one issued by the Hartford Public Library; the latter will be valid only at the Hartford Public Library. Even if you live outside of Connecticut, you can still obtain a library card valid at the Hartford Public Library only upon presentation of picture identification with proof of current address.

Can I obtain more than one HPL card?
Any person shall have no more than one (1) card from the Hartford Public Library.

For how long can I check out a book?
Books may be checked out for two weeks and renewed twice for two weeks per renewal.

For how long can I check out a compact disc?
CDs may be checked out for two weeks and renewed twice for two weeks per renewal.

For how long can I check out a video or DVD?
Videos may be checked out for three days and may be renewed once.

How many videos/DVDs may I check out at a time?
An adult card allows the holder to borrow a total of four video/dvd's representing any combination of items from the primary video collection and from the childrens video collection. A holder of a card from the children's department may borrow one video/dvd at a time.

How many CDs may I check out at a time?
A library card allows the holder to borrow five CDs from the CD collection. A holder of a card from the childrens department may barrow one CD at a time.

How do I place a renewal?
You can call the main library at 695-6290 and renew your items over the telephone. You may also renew your items online. Books and compact discs may be renewed twice, video/dvd's may be renewed once. Note that if another customer has placed a hold on an item it is not renewable.

What are the overdue charges on materials?
For each day that materials are overdue, charges are:

  • 10 cents (Adult books, CD's, audiotapes)

  • 1 cent (Children's books, CD's, audiotapes)

  • $1 (Videos/DVD's)


  • Can I still check out materials if I owe the library for overdues?
    All adults who incur $25 or more in charges, all children who incur $5 or more in charges, and all persons who incur a billed item become ineligible to borrow materials.

    What can I do if the item I want is already checked out?
    When a book or compact disc is already checked out you may place a hold on it by calling 695-6295 or stopping by a Reference Desk. Your library card must be active in order to place the hold. The Library is currently not placing holds on vidoes and DVD's

    What if I my card is lost or stolen?
    It is the responsibility of the customer to report lost or stolen cards. Lost cards may be replaced by re-registering and paying a lost card fee. Lost card fees are:

  • $1 (for adults)

  • 50 cents (for children)


  • What should I do if I move?
    It is the responsibility of the customer to report changes of address and/or name.

    What should I do if my name changes (due to marriage, etc.)
    It is the responsibility of the customer to report changes of name.
