Local Resources: Agencies, Organizations and Information

Kids in the Kitchen is published by the Association of Junior Leagues International.   There are recipes and nutritional helps and hints. List of Nutrition-Related Websites is another publication that includes links to Multi-Cultural sites and alternative life styles as well. in order to view it.

SmartMouth.org is a flashy, fun Web site for kids to test their nutrition smarts while having fun with riddles, and teasers. It will have your kids eating better because they want to, not because their parents said to.

YMCA has local offices in Hartford. Use your zip code to find the one closest to you.  Their exercise programs are fun, low cost and easily available.  Their motto is "We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities. The downtown branch is at:

American Dietetic Association is the largest organization of food and nutrition professionals in the country.  If you are looking to find a nutrition specialist near you, you may search their database by zip, city or state.  The Web site includes a nutrition tip of the day and a monthly nutrition feature.

Fitness and Sports Nutrition  This site features life cycle nutrition and guidelines for the physically active.

Food and Nutrition Information Center  This government website provides tools and education for parents, kids, and educators. 

Nutrition.gov  Learn about nutrition and exercise for kids, adults, shopping wisely, and access to food assistance programs.

Google Groups is a search engine for groups.  Use search terms such as fitness, nutrition,  exercise, or dance to find other users interested in those topics. One such group is called sci.med.nutrition.

Periodical and Newspaper Articles

Use our link to electronic resources to search for articles on exercise and nutrition. You have your choice of using any one of the iConn databases to look for current information.  If you are looking for something to share with a child you might try using InfoTrac Kids Edition or Info Trac Junior edition.  There is also the reliable Health & Wellness Resource Center.  If you are accessing these databases from your office or home you will have to enter your Library barcode

Delicious Living is an online magazine that has many articles and recipes for healthy eating.

Government Web Resources
Exercise: a guide from the National Institute on Aging is an 88 page document designed to help you live longer and more healthily through exercise.

Exercise and Physical Fitness is a page of links published by the National Institutes of Health.  There are resources for young and old, families and Spanish speakers as well.

MyPyramid.gov  explains the new eating and exercise pyramid promoted by the Department of Agriculture.
