Mental health issues affect many people in all cultures. The Library has many books in English and Spanish about such topics as depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders, anxiety and more. In addition the Library has collected materials that focus on mental health in a diverse culture. This community mental health center provides counseling and outpatient psychiatric services for children and adults, as well as outreach to homeless shelters to help shelter residents access services. The Family Treatment Unit provides family counseling and intensive case management to children and adolescents referred by the Dept. of Children and Families, and Smith Family Services provides counseling, family recreational activities and tutoring at its Stowe Village office.

The center provides a wide range of services including issues of gambling, HIV/AIDS, suicide resources, women's services and more. It is operated by the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.  Office of Multicultural Affairs is a part of DMHAS and works to recognizes the impact of cultural differences on the individual and strives to provide quality services to all.

This organization is an affiliate of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill that advocates for the mentally ill.  It is a grassroots organizations for consumers and their families who face mental illness. Their mission is to support, educate and advocate for all who face difficulties due to their illness.

The association is a state-wide non-profit organization.  Their philosophy is that all people have a right to be treated with dignity and respect.  The organization advocates for such treatment for the individual and their families from providers.

The Institute of Living is a non-profit organization that is part of Hartford Hospital.  It is one of the oldest mental health centers in the United States.  It provides both in-patient residential and out-patient services care.  Training and research are two components of the Institute. It has strong programs for all age levels.

The Center for Multicultural Human Services is a non-profit organization staffed by multi-ethnic, multilingual social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, education specialists, art therapists and graduate interns from local universities. CMHS offers a broad range of mental health, social, educational, health and language services geared to the unique values and characteristics of individuals and families from diverse cultures. It has many programs for people who have suffered mental trauma either because of natural disaster, illness or abuse.

National Mental Health Association is the nation's oldest and largest mental health association. It publishes a large collection of fact sheets for the public.
If you have a mental health emergency, please call the National Hopeline Network at (800) 784-2433 immediately to reach a 24 hour crisis center in your area.

The National Institute of Mental Health is a part of the National Institutes of Health.  It is a research institute that also publishes mental health information for the general public.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association (SAMHSA)
SAMHSA's mission is to build resilience and facilitate recovery for people with or at risk for substance abuse and mental illness. A number of publications are available at no cost.

Periodical and Newspaper Articles

The Hartford Public Library offers electronic access to articles through its iConn database service for patrons of Connecticut libraries. You will need your library card to log into the database from home or office. By using the Health and Wellness Resource Center, you will find reliable and current material in Reference works, magazines and pamphlets.  Use terms such as multi-cultural mental health, depression, schizophrenia, or bi-polar disorder.
