Please show your support for Hartford Public Library by attending or sponsoring One Big Summer Night.
One Big Summer Night is the Library’s annual gala, now one of the most anticipated events on Hartford’s social calendar. Each year, the gala brings authors to the City to delight and entertain guests. The gala is held at the beautiful Connecticut Convention Center overlooking the City and the Connecticut River. This gala, which has grown in popularity since it began in 2002, features a noted author, an elegant reception, exciting live and silent auctions, and a sumptuous summer supper.
In the first seven years about 150 people attended, in 2009 250 people attended, in 2010, 450 people attended, and most recently in 2011 725 people attended. Participants represent friends of the Library from a wide spectrum: government, politics, corporate, arts and culture, community-based organizations, foundations, individual donors and residents of the City who are invited as guests of the Library.
Previous featured authors were: Dominick Dunne, Jacques Pépin, Wally Lamb, Francine du Plessix Gray, Colin McEnroe, Nora Pollard, Paul Weidner, Malachy McCourt, Julie Powell, the author of the New York Times bestseller Julie and Julia and in 2011 our featured authors were Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski , stars of MSNBC’s Morning Joe. This year’s gala also included the formal launch of the Library’s new logo and rebranding.
The gala is a truly enjoyable evening where a true sense of community warms the room.
Hartford Public Library is the city’s greatest source of information and free entertainment. In challenging economic times, library usage increases dramatically. Our Library must raise significant private and grant funds to achieve and advance its mission as one of our truly democratic institutions. The print and electronic collections must be constantly refreshed to stay on the cutting edge of available materials. Proceeds from One Big Summer Night are used to purchase print and electronic resources and to sponsor wide-ranging literacy and learning programs to serve the thousands of men, women and children who visit, and depend on, us every day. The gala also allows the Library to maintain computer resources for Hartford residents who need access for information, learning, the needs of daily living, and to find work.
The dollars raised will fund various programs to help us address the needs of our community: low literacy, high poverty, an achievement gap, youth violence and a widening digital divide, among others.
Your participation will offer you a unique way to experience the Library, while helping ensure that we advance our mission of providing essential, free services to the people of Hartford and beyond.
Contributions to events are tax deductible (excluding goods and services provided) and all proceeds benefit Hartford Public Library.
