Requirement
During your interview, your
ability to read, write, and speak in English will be tested. You
will be required to answer questions about your application and you
will also be given a civics test (a test of U.S. History and
Government.) Resources to help you prepare for your citizenship
exam are listed below.
Exemption from the English Literacy requirement
- Over 50 years old
Persons 50 years old who have been a
permanent resident for 20 years, or persons 55 years old who have
been a permanent resident for 15 years are exempt from the English literacy
requirement and may be tested in their native language.
Exemption from the English Literacy requirement
- Over 65 years old
Persons
over the age of 65 who are Permanent Residents and who have resided in
the United States as Permanent Residents for at least 20 years have
different requirements for history and government knowledge. They will be
asked 10 questions from the
following list. They
may also be tested in the language of their choice since they are exempt
from the English literacy requirements.
Those individuals who do not
meet the minimum English language requirement for citizenship are encouraged to enroll in TAP's
free English language classes.
