English Requirement

During your interview, your ability to read, write, and speak in English will be tested. You will be required to answer questions about your application and you will also be given a civics test (a  test of U.S. History and Government.) Resources to help you prepare for your citizenship exam are listed below.

Exemption from the English Literacy requirement - Over 50 years old

Persons 50 years old who have been a permanent resident for 20 years, or persons 55 years old who have been a permanent resident for 15 years are exempt from the English literacy requirement and may be tested in their native language.

Exemption from the English Literacy requirement - Over 65 years old

Persons over the age of 65 who are Permanent Residents and who have resided in the United States as Permanent Residents for at least 20 years have different requirements for history and government knowledge. They will be asked 10 questions from the following list. They may also be tested in the language of their choice since they are exempt from the English literacy requirements.

Those individuals who do not meet the minimum English language requirement for citizenship are encouraged to enroll in TAP's free English language classes.
