World Refugee Day: JUNE 20, 2009

World Refugee Day commemorated around the world on June 20 offers an occasion to raise awareness of the millions of people displaced from their homes each year because of war and fear of persecution. Join us on this day for a series of events designed to promote a better understanding of what triggers displacement, and strategies and programs that help refugees and newcomers “weave a new life” with their remarkable artistic and social skills.

Do Mexico’s Drug Wars Create a New Class of Refugee?

Symposium

1:00 P.M. to 3:30 p.m.

In just over a year, drug violence in Mexico has claimed over 7,000 lives, forcing many Mexicans to flee across the U.S. border without proper documentation. Others have applied for asylum and wait for their cases to be processed. This panel discussion will examine the challenges faced by the international community in defining who may be classified as a refugee or asylee, and the states’ legal obligation to protect them.

Exhibits & Artist’s’ Reception

3:30 to 5:00 P.M.

(Both exhibits will be on display June 1 through July 15.)

Into the Shadows: An exhibit of art focusing on the immigrant experience by celebrated local artist and social activist Marela Zacarias.

Weaving a New Life: Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program brings together women from a number of ethnic communities in a once-a-month sewing circle, where they work on their textile arts. View their work and the arts and crafts of other members of our immigrant and refugee communities.
