Guide to Library Procedures

HOW MAY I OBTAIN A HARTFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY CARD?
All persons who can provide identification with proof of a current Hartford address are eligible to receive a library card from the Hartford Public Library. Residents of Hartford may use this card at any public library in the state. Customers are responsible for all materials borrowed with the card.

MAY I OBTAIN A HARTFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY CARD, IF I DO NOT LIVE IN HARTFORD?

Persons that reside in a town other than Hartford may use either their own valid hometown library card or have one issued by the Hartford Public Library, which will be valid only at the Hartford Public Library. Simply present picture identification with proof of current address.

MAY I OBTAIN MORE THAN ONE CARD?
Any person shall have no more than one card from the Hartford Public Library.

FOR HOW LONG MAY I CHECK OUT A BOOK?
Books may be checked out for two weeks and renewed twice for two weeks per renewal.

FOR HOW LONG MAY I CHECK OUT A CD (COMPACT DISC)?
CDs may be checked out for two weeks and renewed twice for two weeks per renewal.

FOR HOW LONG MAY I CHECK OUT A VIDEO?
Videos may be checked out for three days and renewed once for three more days.

HOW MANY ITEMS MAY I CHECK OUT AT A TIME?
An adult card allows the holder to borrow at any one time four videos from the primary video collection and four videos from the Children’s video collection, five CDs and a limit of fifty books. A holder of a card from the Children’s Department may borrow at any one time one video, one CD, and a limit of twenty-five books.

HOW DO I PLACE A RENEWAL?
You may call the library at 695-6290 and renew your items over the telephone. Books and CDs may be renewed twice, videocassettes may be renewed once. Note that if another customer has reserved an item it is not renewable.

WHAT ARE THE OVERDUE CHARGES ON OVERDUE MATERIALS?
For each day that materials are overdue, charges are: ten cents per adult book and CD; one cent per child’s book and CD; one dollar per video.

MAY I STILL CHECK OUT MATERIALS IF I OWE THE LIBRARY FOR OVERDUES?
All adults who owe $25 or more in charges, all children who owe $5 or more in charges, and all persons who owe a billed item become ineligible to borrow materials until the bill is paid.

WHAT CAN I DO IF THE ITEM I WANT IS ALREADY CHECKED OUT?
When a book or compact disc is already checked out, you may reserve it by calling 695-6295 or stopping by a reference desk. Your library card must be active in order to place the hold.  The Library does not reserve videos at this time.

WHAT IF MY CARD IS LOST OR STOLEN?
It is the responsibility of the customer to report lost or stolen cards. Lost cards may be replaced by re-registering and paying a lost card fee. Lost card fees are: one dollar for adults and fifty cents for children.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I MOVE?
It is the responsibility of the customer to report a change of address.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY NAME CHANGES (DUE TO MARRIAGE, ETC.)?
It is the responsibility of the customer to report a name change.
