VITA PROGRAM
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance for households with annual incomes of $45,000.00 or less

If you would like FREE assistance preparing your federal and state income tax returns, consult with our volunteers:

Tuesdays, January 22 through April 15 from
4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Wednesdays, January 23 through April 9
4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Thursdays, January 24 through April 10 from
4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Saturdays, January 26 through April 12 from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Appointments are highly recommended.  Please call InfoLine at 211 to make an appointment.

Walk-ins will be assisted as possible on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hartford Public Library provides tax forms and instructions as a service to our customers.  We also maintain files of reproducible forms for the State of Connecticut and the IRS.  These materials can be found near the Service Desk in the Central Library as well as in the Library's other branches.

FORMS TO BRING TO A TAX ASSISTANCE SITE

  • All W-2 forms for household members
  • All 1099 forms (if any) for household members
  • Social Security card(s) or Individual Taxpayer ID Number(s) for all household members
  • Last year's tax return (if you have one)
  • Child care provider name(s), address(es), and tax ID number(s)
  • Education expenses and student loan information
  • For direct deposit of a check refund, a check or savings account number with routing number
  • Any other tax-related documents you have received
 

FEDERAL TAXES

Federal tax forms, instructions, and other publications are available for downloading and online viewing. (Many of these files can be best viewed and printed using Adobe's free Acrobat Reader.  Download the program and follow the instructions on Adobe's download page.)

Electronic filing of federal taxes is available from several sources online, usually for a fee.  Millions of  taxpayers are eligible for  Free File.  Free File is online tax preparation and electronic filing through a partnership agreement between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, LLC.  Find out if you qualify.

AARP Tax-Aide

AARP Tax-Aide was established in 1968 to help older persons complete their tax returns.  This program is available from February 1-April 15 each year.  Use the AARP Tax-Aide Site Locator to identify AARP Tax-Aide sites in your area.  Appointments are required.
