09.30.21 - Scam Alert Relating to Libraries
Hartford Public Library was recently made aware of a fraudulent email scam that appears as an overdue notice from public libraries, billing him/her/them for an overdue item. While the email may look official, it’s not. Hartford Public Library emails will come from the @hplct.org address only. The reported fraudulent overdue notice came from the address: publiclibrary@notice-compliance.gov which appears to be a known scam across the country: • The fraudulent email seems to always be about a missing copy of the "Da Vinci Code." • The fraudulent email will typically inform the customer they owe $97.14 for the lost book. • There will be a link for a pay portal - do not click on the link! • These emails do not seem to be connected in any way to a customer's account or other confidential information. If you receive an email that doesn’t seem to be from a trusted source: • Do not open it • Delete it immediately • Do not download any attachments • Never click links that appear in the message • Do not reply to sender and do not call phone numbers provided in the message • When in doubt, contact Hartford Public Library by phone, 860-695-6300, by email contactus@hplct.org or by using the Chat Box service on our website at www.hplct.org
